Monday Motivation | The Makeup Date
Happy Monday loves! This past weekend I had the honor of hosting @bloomingdales annual ⭐️ VIP Makeup Date ⭐️ (check out my stories this week for more deets and #bts footage ⬆️⬆️⬆️) and it reminded me of 3 things that I hope motivate you to pursue your dreams.
1) The building blocks aka your journey is just as important as your final destination.
2) When you do what you love - it just feels right! That doesn’t mean that you won’t make mistakes, but you’ll ideally learn from them; and those lessons will help you continue to grow into your destiny.
3) Surround yourself with people that love you enough to challenge you to be better and that will support your BHAGs - whether near or far.
Thank you for having me @christinamariejoy and @bloomiesf! Another amazing sold out - energy packed - beauty filled - glamorous event 💫

Oakland Unified School District | Future Leader in Medicine & Science Spotlight - Derek Jones Jr. #mondaymotivation #oaklandstorybank
Today, almost 1/3 of students nationwide leave high school without the skills they need to succeed in college, have a fulfilling career and/or earn a family-supporting living.
Sooooo...what’s being done to address this?
For today’s #mondaymotivation I’m excited to highlight one of the programs Oakland Unified School District has created to help students succeed and specifically break into the medical field - Medicine & Science (MIMS) in the following video clip.
Derek Jones, Jr. - one of Oakland Tech’s brightest future leaders in Medicine and Science shares how his background, his family, and his community have shaped his life and future interests. Spending time with Derek was so motivating and refreshing. So my challenge to my loves out there: I encourage each of you to take some time away from your daily hustle to go back and volunteer for 1 day at a local school this year - I promise you it will be worth it!
These students need us and they need help telling their stories! Someone reached out to me to use my platform to highlight some of these students breaking into difficult industries. But outside of having this platform I would want to do this because these students and their stories personally resonate with me when I think about my own journey. And as @weloveoakland pointed out “a child educated only at school is an uneducated child”. These unique after school programs are another part of the village that’s STILL needed to raise our children. Disclaimer: this is the first clip I’ve created like this and my video skills are a work in progress. But I hope you walk away with the same feelings I did after I met Derek - #inspired and #hopeful!

Style, Hosting & Brand Tips: Happy Sunday loves! In this edition of #sundayslay I am sharing 3 great tips to help you own any stage you are on this year. Enjoy 😊
1) Be on Brand. My brand always includes a POP of color.
Shoes - Note the red @azzedinealaiaofficialgunmetal high heeled sandals ✨
Coat - My timely @blackpanther inspired @dior @saks print masterpiece
Jeans - Paired with my favorite dark denim high waisted @frame jeans.
These are my basics of dressed up casual.
2) Play off of the energy of your audience. To do this you have to know your audience, right? Do the extra homework in advance to understand who will be in attendance and then feed off of the LIVE momentum in the room.
3) Do a little twirl. Be a little extra. Have fun and don’t be afraid to be your UNIQUE self. Note my spin and look back 👀😝.
P.s. And what are these shoes? See Tip 1 👆🏾and more fun covering the hottest looks, crowd faves and #bts footage from my recent fashion show @saks and after party @kayasf1 sponsored by @woodfordreserve.
Don’t let anyone with bad eyebrows tell you anything about life 😝😂
Makeup Tip: Happy Thursday loves! Wrapping up my #saksagelessbeauty content I wanted to share and recap 3 beauty tips for our faces.
👀: Before you get started on eye makeup your eyebrows are the frame to your beauty portrait. I’ve been threading mine for years, but microblading is also getting solid feedback these days (share your stories below if you’re trying it 👇🏾). Whatever you do just make sure you invest in a healthy eyebrow shape for your face. THEN move on to makeup...
👁: Going bold with color on your eye doesn’t mean you have to run to eyeshadow. I love to add a color POP to bring focus to my eyes with eyeliner, like the icy blue ❄️ @yslbeauty liner I’m rocking here. A fun color can give you just the right touch without overpowering your entire look.
👄: A bold lip - we’ve discussed the importance of finding your best red, but take the time to invest in the best color POP lippie for you this season. And don’t be afraid to blend - I’m actually rocking 2 colors here ☺️
Leave them talking...
Style Tip: Happy Monday loves! Have a presentation coming up? Your ‘visual’ presentation is just as important (not your PowerPoint or slides 👩🏾🏫🤓). I suggest that you focus on having at least one beauty or style accent that ✨leaves them talking✨!
Ladies - this can be a bold lip, a killer dress, or fierce heels (I went for all 3 because I’m extra 😝).
Gents - this can be your tailored suit, unique cuff links or statement stocks.
So what’s your thing that always ✨leaves them talking✨?
P.s. And hair is a given for ALL of us. Fresh edge/line up, fresh press, twists, or blow out ladies! Beijos 💋
Leave them talking...pt 2 ✌🏾#bts
Style Tip: Embrace your shape with open arms 🤗 and happy Tuesday loves! I LOVED reading your responses to the question I posed yesterday...
‘So what’s your thing that always ✨leaves them talking✨?’
So continuing the train of thought I had to share an example of why identifying an answer to this question is SO important. After wrapping up round 2 of the #saksagelessbeauty panel with a champagne🥂 (yes, any after work panel needs to be a happy hour - ideally with bubbles 😝) this lovely lady came up to me and said her colleague could NOT get over my dress. So much that she actually went downstairs to try to buy it on the spot!
Now remember, for those of you keeping up with my timeline, this panel was focused on beauty and skincare. I knew I was going to go with a bold lip for the day, but what actually tied that color selection together was THE dress. Embracing my shape I know that anything that highlights my waist is going to be a win. So when I saw this dress WITH the color pop highlights I had a strong feeling we had a winner on our hands to ‘leave them talking’...and that we surely did 🙅🏾♀️
Hello my loves! It's time to do a check in now that I'm more than a month into my #countdowntocoachella #corepoweryoga fitness challenge.
Soooooo...unless you are living under a rock who isn't OVER the MOON to finally see the queen Beyonce heading Coachella this year besides me?
Yes, me too! So you know we have to get in formation and before Beyonce broke the internet
announcing that she was going vegan again I already had plans to get my life - and specifically my CORE in order to be crop top ready for Coachella Weekend 1. But how was I going to do it with this small window of time in front of me? And that's when it hit me! Why not step out of my traditional fitness comfort zone and try something different?
Fast forward 1 month later.
Now - guess what? I'm a YOGI.
Yes, Safiya is a YOGI. The girl that tried Yoga and was skeptical of giving up a hour a day to complete a work out that didn't really feel like a work out or where I wasn't leaving sweating.
Well, well, well was I mistaken.
3 Things I've learned with CorePower Yoga
1. So what is CorePower Yoga anyways? How is this different then regular yoga?
CorePower Yoga is unlike any other yoga you've tried. In fact, it’s unlike any other fitness experience, period. You’ll work every muscle and every emotion to change your body and your life. Hence the reason I'm now a YOGI. More about this in pt 2.
Second, their yoga studios are modern, spacious places you can call your own with all the conveniences you need. Shout out to my favorite home studio in the Marina and I can NOT wait for the new Van Ness location to open up.
Next, their certified yoga instructors are trained to teach their unique style of yoga, so you’re bound to experience a highly physical and incredibly mindful workout. Shout out to my favorite instructors that make EVERY minute of class worth it - Shannon, Lexy & Hailey, even my morning 5:30am classes ;-)
Finally, their wide range of class offerings means there’s most likely a class that’s perfect for you no matter where you are in your practice. That means you do not have to have yoga training or experience to take a class! So what do you have to lose? I started out with their free 1 week trial program and now I'm addicted.
Every class I take is practiced in a heated room. The warm temperature stretches muscle fibers and tendons to help prevent injuries as you work out. It also increases circulation throughout the body, enhances immune system function and encourages tissue repair. These yoga classes do feel more challenging because of the added heat, which is why they encourage you to pace yourself and determine the intensity that works best for YOU.
But every class has their own special rhythm that shed's a little light into the soul of the instructor. One such class offered one of my favorite bonus treats today (outside of hands on adjustments, which are offered only IF you want them...and I always want to improve my practice :)...
So - here's the story! Winding down at the end of of a great class in the middle of baby's pose I start to smell an aroma...no - not that sweat, but was that a therepeautic hint of lemongrass I smelled at the end of my CorePower Yoga 2 session? Oh yes it was!!
Lemongrass in this particular class was used externally as aromatherapy and it's an essential oil that is used to relieve muscle pain and reduce body aches. What a perfect way to bring the spa atmosphere into the room to refresh your senses after a great workout. *Please note - this is not used in every class.*
Setting intentions in CorePower Yoga is one of the most powerful moments of each and every class. In the book 5 Steps to Setting Powerful Intentions, Deepak Chopra says intention “is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, spiritual awakening, or love.”
Our minds have SO much on them and our constantly racing. I've been trying really hard to reset, be mindful and be present this year. Have an intention offered by my yoga instructor at the onset of every class really helps me focus and make the most of my workout. I didn't grow up playing a sport for school so I've learned over the years that a lot of fitness and endurance is really mental.
With intention setting, you can #liveyourpower and choose to live your life on purpose by consciously choosing to set your intention. Read that sentence again. And then try to set an intention tomorrow morning.
Intention setting ignite's the best part of my being and helps me come in sync with giving MY all during class. And that takes me to my last point I know you've all been waiting for....
So, how exactly did you lose those 10lbs?
Life is all about balance. Balancing losing weight and being healthy is a lifestyle choice that when done correctly can help you achieve your most ambitious fitness goals naturally.
Reviewing my fitness goals, I knew that if I consistently worked out at least 4-5 times a week and did a better job of maintaining my diet I could lose weight. I targeted 10 lbs (I'm tall so I can carry weight y'all - trust me!), but I would've been satisfied with 5 lbs and stomach definition to be in full formation for the crop tops that I'll likely be wearing for Coachella. Goals help you stay focused. Trust me.
For those of you that love a GOOD burn Yoga Sculpt is for you.
Yoga Sculpt is when muscle meets yoga. It helps you boost your metabolism and build lean muscle mass as you move to upbeat tracks. You combine free weights with Core Power Yoga 2 (heated power Vinyasa-style) sequencing and cardio to intensify each yoga pose while mixing in strength training moves like squats, lunges and bicep curls. You'll want a bottle of water, a towel and your yoga mat. Weights are provided at the studio.
This class is the core secret to my weight loss, but I was advised that it's good to toss in a CP2 or CP1 class for.... what's that magic word again...balance!
And last but not least - my diet. Not DIETING. I don't really believe in that because that's not the secret to longstanding change in your body. So I've been more consistently eating the things we already know are good for us. More greens, less carbs, more healthy lean protein.
Now to keep this up and if you take advantage of this free week offer tell them Safiya sent you!
p.s. Here's a bonus video recap of my journey
Melanin queen, with high expectations who only knows how to do the most.
